Dr. Renqun Zhang passed away at the age of 86 on the morning of March 30, 2024 at the Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, California, 8 days after a fall on his daily afternoon walk.
Dr. Zhang was born on February 2, 1938 in Nankang, Jiangxi, China. He visited Sacramento, California almost every other year after retirement and moved to live in Sacramento in 2015 to be close to his children and grandchildren. Although growing up in a remote village without electricity, he made a substantial impact over his 40 year career in clinical dermatology and administrating regional infectious disease control organizations. His honors included a national award for his dedication to eradicating leprosy in Jiangxi province. Moreover, he worked closely with the WHO of the United Nations as a leprosy treatment expert in India. He was very athletic as a young man, swimming and playing basketball for many years. Dr. Zhang never stopped learning over the course of his life. At the age of 70, he began learning to proficiently use computer to keep up with world affairs and to write in Chinese input, no small challenge for his age. He wrote an autobiographical memoir, a brief History of Leprosy in Jiangxi Province, and a journal for taking care of his grandsons during his visits to California.
Dr. Zhang was an extremely caring and supportive husband, a loving father and grandfather. His sudden passing is mourned by his wife Nanying Liu, his daughter Qiaohong Zhang, his son Zhigang Zhang, his grandsons, Yunfan Zhang, Brian Shan, Alex Shan, his granddaughter Danwei Zhang, his brother Renzhen Zhang, his niece Xiuying Zhang, his grand nephew Shengtian Zhang, his daughter-in-law Yuxi Zhang, his son-in-law Kaiyu Shan, and hundreds of people he touched in his life.
