Reverend Hughes was a graduate of Liberty High School (1955), Furman University (1959), and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1963). He served as a Pastor of Baptist Churches in Camden, Anderson, Greer, and Columbia. He served as Director of Missions for 18 years for the Abbeville Baptist Association (now Lakelands Baptist Association).
