Richard "Rick" Howell Adkins, of Norman, OK, was born on December 22, 1957, and passed from this life on December 14, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Lois A. Adkins, and his son, Warren A. Simpson Adkins. Surviving siblings include Robert Adkins, Randell Adkins and Adam Adkins.
Rick spent much of his formative years in England and Scotland, where his father worked on the oil wells in the North Sea. His family is most notable to Adkins Crossing, near Adkins Hill Road south of Norman. Rick's Great-Grandfather provided a ferry service during the land run of 1889 across the South Canadian River. Following graduation from high school, Rick attended the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in Journalism. While attending OU Rick discovered a passion for law enforcement. Rick also served in the United States Air Force.
Rick worked for the University of Oklahoma Police Department and later the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department for many years. Rick's second passion, writing, also began to see some successes. Some of Rick's writing was sufficient to allow him to leave law enforcement to become a full-time author.
Rick married his beloved wife, Lois, on May 26, 1989, and they remained married until his death. The couple adopted Warren Simpson Adkins as their son. Lois and Warren live in Norman.
A memorial service is planned for the 4th day of January, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. and will be held at Crosspoint Church and streamed live.
Donations to the family to help defray expenses of Rick's illness and death services will be accepted through Venmo. Lois's Venmo account is @Lois-Adkins-7 for those at a distance or those who wish to remain anonymous.
