Richard Lee Applegate, age 73 of Newark, DE passed away peacefully at home with loved ones by his side on May 2, 2025.
He was born in Grand Rapids, MI and was raised in Pensacola, Florida. Richard is the son of the late Leona (Landman) and Ellsworth Applegate. He graduated from Pensacola High School in 1969. While in high school Richard was in the band and was an excellent trumpet musician.
At a young age Richard enjoyed working on cars with his father and learning karate from his brother who was a black belt.
Richards first job was working as a meat cutter at a butcher shop. Later he proudly began serving his county in the United States Army from 1975 to 1988. He worked directly for a Two Star General. Richard became proficient in computer technology and earned his bachelor's degree. Richard retired from the Army with an Honorable Discharge as a staff sergeant.
Richard's computer knowledge later became valuable to the University of Delaware where he served as an IT technician until he retired.
He is survived by his wife Mary Piechowski, his daughter Michelle Applegate; numerous grandchildren and his siblings Phyllis Applegate, Tanya Cooney (Mark) and April Miller. He is also proceeded in death by his brother, Keith Applegate
A viewing will be held on Friday, May 9 from 10-11 am at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808.A funeral service will be at 11 am with military honors to follow. Burial will be held privately.
