Richard Glen Barrows, age 79, of Chicago, IL, a loving father, brother, and dear friend to many, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 13, 2023.
Richard was a gifted engineer and mathematician who always had a love for learning and science. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1966 and earned his MBA degree from Northern Illinois University in 1978. He started his career at Motorola in 1966, where Richard and his co-worker designed a radio frequency (RF) filter that they were able to patent. He also worked for Northrop Grumman, where he held a Top Secret Security Clearance with the United States Government for the work that he did on the B-2 Stealth Bomber. We will never know what work he did on the B-2, but he was very proud to have done it.
Richard's family members and friends were considered an important part of his life. He especially enjoyed skiing, boating, camping, and going to air shows with his sons. Richard was also a father figure to his sons' friends, as he loved them dearly and treated them as his own. His fondest memories with his sons and their friends was attending the annual EAA Fly-In in Oshkosh, WI, and canoeing on Wisconsin's Sugar River. He also held dear to his heart the daughter he never had, his daughter-in-law and angel, Joy Barrows.
The loving father of Craig (Joy) Barrows and Brian Barrows, Richard is also survived by his brothers, Michael (Susan) Barrows and Scott (Jo) Barrows, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glendon and Mabel Barrows, and by his sister, Patricia, née Barrows, Machak.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), 3000 Poberezny Rd., Oshkosh, WI, 54903 (eaa.org), to recognize his lifetime love of aviation.
Richard was a loving and caring man who will be loved and missed by family and friends always.

This one is for you Richard. The Illini made one of the most exciting finishes in decades today in football and won. I miss your call and hearing you say "did you see the Illini today???". Was always a special time for us. I miss you big brothers.

Last week was the one year anniversary of Dicks passing and I still think about him often. I have many memories of Dick from my childhood days when I looked up to him in awe as my "big" brother to the many times we got together for White Sox games, Illinois football tail gate parties with my retro Thunderbird, lunch with just Dick and me to the three Amigos (Dick, Scott & me) get together at Cantigny, the Illinois Railway Museum, Vintage Illinois at Starved Rock, the Flossmoor Brewery, lunch at the Medical Center/College of Dentistry and many other occasions.

What an awesome big brother! I was the youngest of four in our family, and inspired by each of my 3 older siblings. Dick was the oldest and I always looked up to his wit and brilliant mind. We did not always agree, but were never disagreeable. His knowledge in engineering aviation was incredible. He inspired me to be much more than I thought possible. I loved my visits to U of I to spend a few days with Dick (and also with brother Mike) and going to classes and research labs. Taking the Illinois Central train to Champaign made these visits extra special as we shared the love of trains.

Most of all, Dick loved his family and friends. We could always go to him. When he got sick, his boys and special angel Joy were there for him. So was his brother Mike. Our "three amigos" get togethers will forever be one of the many memories that we will have forever.

We love you, big bro. God bless.
