Richard Eugene ("Gene") Bowersox, aka "Sox", age 93, died peacefully at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Waldorf, Maryland on Saturday, August 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born on October 25, 1931 in Washington, D.C., son of Francis and Margaret Bowersox. He grew up in a military family, where he learned the values of faith, hard work and a strong sense of patriotism. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served 4 years, including a tour in the Korean War. Gene's commitment and loyalty to the military was proven by his countless donations to various military organizations. Gene was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Gene Bowersox. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Mary Faith, his children Hope (Jack), Gary, Gail, and Mary Beth (Dan). Pop Pop cherished his 12 grandchildren, Davina (Butch), Matthew, Mark (Michele), Travis (Leah), Melissa (Mike), Philip (Stephanie), Michele (Fred), Andrew, Holly (Ryan), Michael (Lindsey), Kyle (Lisa) and Justin (Jessica) plus 19 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Sox attended Anacostia High School where he made life-long friends. He continued to meet with them for quarterly lunches and enjoyed their conversations. He was a dear friend to many. Gene began his career at Washington Gas Light Company in the drafting department then moved on to various positions where he retired after 36 years. To support his growing family, he also worked and retired with 18 years as a Manager for the Giant Food Company. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle cousin and friend. He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, to include boxing matches, especially hailing the Washington Redskins and the Nationals. He never missed ballgames, dance recitals, graduations, birthday parties and numerous outdoor celebrations, which, no doubt included crab feasts. He had a competitive nature, challenging us to horseshoes, ping pong, basketball and jacks. These traditions continued when he became a proud Pop Pop playing Uno, Yahtzee and cards. So many funny memories were made throughout his life as a Dad and Pop Pop. He enjoyed daily rides with the love of his life, which included Colonial Beach, where they would reminisce about the good old days when the Bowersox's and Goforth's spent many summers vacationing together swimming, fishing and crabbing. Pop Pop took great pride in his yard. He loved riding his lawn mower, planting, mulching, pruning and watering. He definitely left this legacy to his children and grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, at Raymond Funeral Services, 5635 Washington Avenue, LaPlata, MD 20646. Private family viewing at 2:00PM followed by public viewing at 3:00PM with a Memorial Service at 5:00PM. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 10:30AM at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any military organization or Hospice of the Chesapeake in Waldorf, MD.
