Richard Nichols Cammett, 96, of Groveland, passed away at his residence on Monday, September 11, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Groveland on August 17, 1927, son of the late C. Russell and Mildred I. (Nichols) Cammett.
Dick attended the Groveland School system and Admiral Farragut Academy in
St. Petersburg, FL. He enlisted in the United States Navy and went on to study Finance and Investments at Babson College. He graduated with the class of 1949. He began his career in sales and went on to become a District Manager with Prudential Insurance. After many years with Prudential, he began a career as an arson investigator with the Claims Bureau Agency which later led to him establishing his own business. He returned to Finance and Investments, serving on several boards in the Haverhill Community. He was the CEO of the N. Woodburn Nichols Foundation which led to the inception of Nichols Village in Groveland MA.
Dick had a full and adventurous life with many interests and hobbies. Sailing with family was his true passion. He was a sports fanatic, loving all Boston teams, especially the Red Sox. He was drafted by the New York Yankees and pitched for their minor league team. As a youth summering on Plum Island, he developed his love for the water, boating and fishing. He began sailing at an early age and raced Town Class sailboats with the AYC. He and his wife went on to race competitively for many years. He enjoyed cruising aboard his sailboat "Wink" with his family along the Eastern Seaboard.
Dick is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Eileen I. Cammett, affectionately known as Wink. He is survived by their seven children and their spouses, Joanne, and Dr. Anthony Hayden of Plum. Island, Richard Jr. and Patricia Cammett of Ipswich, David and Susan Cammett of Haverhill, Christine, and Jack Leary of
Stratham, N.H., Lisa and Stephen Hayden of West Newbury, Patricia Cammett and Lynne Almond of Plum Island, and Janice and Bill Lane of
Alpharetta, GA. Dick is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Sean Hayden and Jennifer O'Keefe, Lindsay Calvo, Meredith Cammett, Richard Cammett III and Jill Neumann, Ethan Cammett, Brien and Daniel Leary and Meghan Byron, Stephen Hayden, Jr., William and Emily Lane and 15 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
His arms are once again wrapped around his beloved wife Wink, and he will be forever in our hearts.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his calling hours on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 5-7 PM in the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. His funeral services will begin Friday morning Sept. 15 at 10 AM at Groveland Congregational Church, 4 King St.,
Groveland, MA 01834. Interment with military honors will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, Groveland. Contributions in his memory may be made to the
