Richard "Dick" Alan Davenport, 77, of
Scottsburg, IN, passed from this life on Monday,
January 20, 2025, in Louisville, KY. He was born in
Scottsburg, IN on November 2,
1947, to Frank Vanburen Davenport and Margaret Louise Davenport (née Ditzel), who
preceded him in death along with a brother, Gary, who died before Dick was born. Dick
was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, with whom he was
close nearly all his life.
Dick was a proud graduate of Henryville High School and kept in touch with many of his
classmates. He was also a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, receiving a
B.S. in accounting. Dick spent his career in a number of positions and very happily and
proactively retired at age 50 from Bank of America having spent many years managing
a large mortgage servicing department of colleagues for whom he genuinely cared. He
also worked at the American Can Company in Austin, IN and the Marble Hill
construction plant site near Hanover, IN.
Dick's lengthy retirement was a joyful time as he and his beloved wife, Cheryl, traveled
to National Parks, Gatlinburg, Key West, and other places, often with April, their
daughter, accompanying them. He loved the outdoors, nature, and being active. He
was an athlete and, in his adulthood, enjoyed exercising at the YMCA in Scottsburg
nearly daily, hiking, biking, and running. Dick hiked every trail in the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park multiple times. He also enjoyed caring for the park-like yard at
the home he and Cheryl shared in Scottsburg.
Dick served two terms as treasurer on the Scottsburg YMCA Board and several, also as
treasurer, on the board of the Rural Membership Water Corporation Board in Henryville,
which he tremendously enjoyed. This position allowed him to serve his cherished
Henryville community and be with wonderful board and employee colleagues. Dick also
enjoyed his Tuesday lunch gatherings with close friends, Glen, Jerry, Brian, and Bob.
Dick met his wife, Cheryl, when they were six and began dating her the day after his
sixteenth birthday. They married in late 1969 and had April in 1970. He was completely
devoted to them and fully supported them in all their endeavors.
Dick enjoyed live music of all kinds. He and Cheryl began taking April with them to
concerts in her early childhood. They enjoyed many artists, foremost being Jimmy
Buffett, whom they saw, along with his Coral Reefer Band, dozens of times. They
cherished these times together and the friendships they developed with members of the
Coral Reefer Band and others they met along the way.
Dick was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in late 2014. He had
the benefit of the most excellent, caring, and compassionate medical treatment from
many doctors and medical professionals for which Cheryl and April are overwhelmingly
grateful. Dick bravely and fiercely confronted every medical report and recommended
treatment and followed every instruction with the endurance, discipline, and stoic spirit
of the athlete and strong-spirited person he was.
Dick's heart belonged to his family and community. He is survived by wife, Cheryl
Davenport (née Watson), of Scottsburg, his daughter, April Davenport, of Louisville, KY,
his cousin Steven Hoehn (Anna), of Sellersburg, IN, and many brothers-in-law, sisters-
in-law, and nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to visit and pay their respects on Friday, February 7,
2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM until
the service time at 11:00 AM at Adams Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Henryville,
