Richard Charles Harkness (1955-2025)
Richard Charles Harkness, 69, of Coatesville, PA, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at Paoli Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, Richard was the son of the late John Emerson Harkness and the late Joan Martha (nee Kelleher) Harkness.

Richard, a member of the Class of 1974 at Maple Shade High School, dedicated his life to public service through a distinguished career in law enforcement. He began his career as a patrolman in Wildwood, NJ, over the summers as he studied at Michigan State. He retired from the New Castle County Police Department after 22 years, and later continued his career as Superintendent of the Tredyffrin Police Department from 2001 to 2008. He valued education and lifelong learning, earning a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, a master's degree from Wilmington College, and degrees and certifications from Penn State University, University of Delaware, and the University of Louisville where he graduated from their Southern Police Institute's executive development program.

In his younger years, Richard treasured his time growing up at the Jersey Shore with his brother and cousins. He carried a love for adventure throughout his life, with passions including scuba diving, fishing, and racquetball.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Kelsey Harkness (Brett Arnold) and Abbey Kremser (Michael), and his brother, Bruce Harkness (Tina). He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his service to the community, and his zest for life.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 104 Channing Ave., Malvern, PA, 19355, immediately followed by a funeral service. The family would appreciate Memorial Donations to Chester County Hero Fund, 11 Court Drive, Downingtown, PA 19335, www.chestercountyherofund.com. Arrangements are by The Bernard S.
