Richard T. Lunger, M.D., age 83 years, of Tewksbury Township, NJ, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Rochester, NY, June 7, 1941, he was the son of the late Gordon R. and Helen (Thomas) Lunger. He had formerly resided in Flemington, NJ before moving to Tewksbury Township, NJ. After retiring from his medical practice, he and his wife Carol moved to Wyoming for several years, before returning to Hunterdon County, NJ.
He was a graduate of Muhlenberg College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Dr. Lunger formerly practiced as a family physician at Charlestown Medical Group, Hampton, NJ and in Lebanon, NJ for 12 years. After operating the family practice, he became an emergency room physician for 21 years at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington, NJ, until retiring.
He was a proud United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and then served 22 years in the United States Air Force Reserve, during which time he was activated for duty at an armed forces hospital in Nuremberg, Germany during the Persian Gulf War. He retired from the Air Force in February of 2000 as a Colonel.
Dr. Lunger was a member of the Hunterdon County Medical Society and a lifetime member of the Reserve Officers Association.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy (Lunger) MacNeill.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 42 years, Carol (Mackler) Lunger; his children, Rick Lunger, Mike Lunger and his spouse Rebecca (Feinberg), David Lunger and his spouse Tera (Novacek), and Alyssa (Lunger) Cramer; his step-daughters, Dori Mansur and her spouse Edward Ratka, and Dara Mansur and her spouse Jim Colestock; and his grandchildren, Andrew Lunger and spouse Emily (Prentice), Courtney (Lunger) and her spouse Mike Fernandes, Grace Lunger, Rose Lunger, Matthew Cramer, Jason Cramer, Brooks Lunger, Mitch Ratka, Ellie Ratka, Mason Colestock, Michelle Ratka, and Lauren Ratka; and his great grandchildren, Jessica Fernandes, Olivia Lunger, and Lucas Fernandes.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather and visit with the family from 2:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. A brief memorial service will immediately follow the visitation at 4:00 PM in the funeral home.
