Richard "Rich" MacMullen, age 83, a lifelong resident of St. Augustine, passed away on May 24th, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born to Leo and Anne MacMullen on Dec. 4, 1940 in St. Augustine. He attended St. Johns County Schools and was a 1958 graduate of Ketterlinus High School. Richard was a gifted athlete and played for the Ketterlinus High School Baseball team where he was an accomplished pitcher, throwing many no hitters during his playing time. More importantly he began dating the love of his life, Shirley Usina, during high school. Richard spent a few years pursuing a career in baseball, playing wherever he could, including a stent with the Milwaukee Braves Farm Team. He worked for a short time for the FEC Railroad and married Shirley, his high school sweetheart, on January 28, 1962. Richard worked for Fairchild Aircraft Company from 1960 to 1975 and for the City of St. Augustine as a Building Inspector from 1975 to 1980. For 21 years Richard enjoyed a successful career with Northrop Grumman as a Supervisor. He traveled extensively for the company and was a liaison engineer with the Egyptian Air Force in 1996 to 1997. He retired from Northrop Grumman in 2001. Richard also put his skills to work developing the Moultrie Trace and Homestead Estates subdivisions off Wildwood Drive in St. Augustine. Throughout his life, Richard continued to excel in sports, playing in local softball leagues. He was very active in the community volunteering his time to Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels, where his kindness touched many lives. He was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a member of the Jacksonville and St. Augustine Coin Clubs. In his retirement Richard and Shirley traveled extensively with their camper in tow to favorite spots in Yellowstone and North Carolina. He found joy in simple pleasures like fishing, and gardening. But more than anything he loved his family, and had recently celebrated his 62nd anniversary of his marriage to Shirley. Richard truly enjoyed the American Dream, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley MacMullen of St. Augustine; a son, Richard Brian (Kim) MacMullen; daughters, Sheila Marie Battell, Katrina Louise (Joe) Graham all of St. Augustine; grandchildren, Austin Graham, Mariah Downing, Andrew Graham, Landon MacMullen, Savannah Graham, Aviley Degrande, and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with Larry McLean officiating. Interment will follow at Wildwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home.
