Obituary for Richard Mazalewski
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Mazalewski, age 80, of Carver, Massachusetts, who peacefully passed away with his family by his side on March 15, 2025. Richard was born on December 27, 1944, in Onset, MA, moved to Plymouth at an early age, and after marrying his wife, Joyce, moved to Carver in 1970.
Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years Joyce, his son Michael Mazalewski (husband David Demers) and his daughter Laureen Modder (husband Larry). He was the cherished grandfather of four grandchildren who will miss him dearly: Kiera, Kelsie, Kaelyn and Oliver.
Richard spent several years serving in the Air Force stationed at K. I. Sawyer Air Force base in Michigan. After moving back to live in Carver, he joined the Plymouth Fire Department, eventually rising to the rank of Captain, and retired after 23 years of service. He was also a member of Carver's Volunteer Fire Department and The American Legion.
Richard showed unwavering support for his young family, working multiple jobs to support them, making time for boating trips in Cape Cod Bay and family vacations, and instilling a drive and work ethic in his children. He took great pride in seeing his children use those lessons to reach their goals. He also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and sitting along the shore of Plymouth Bay taking in the salty air and sunshine. He could fix almost anything and especially enjoyed passing his carpentry skills on to others. Much like in life, when fearing and facing death, he was able to use humor to lighten the situation. Richard's presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his immediate family, Richard leaves behind his sisters Mary Zaniboni and Irene Wood and brother Robert Mazalewski, several nieces and nephews, friends and extended family members, all of whom will carry his memory in their hearts. He was predeceased by his brother William Mazalewski.
Memorial Visting hours will be held at Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main Street in Carver, on Sunday, March 23rd, from 4:00 to 8:00. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, March 24th at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Carver at 11:00am. Burial services will directly follow at Center Cemetery in Carver.
Rest in peace, Richard. Your legacy will continue to inspire all who knew you.

Captain Maz, Station 2 (West Plymouth) was instrumental in molding my first years on Plymouth Fire. We didn´t always agree on Union matters but he knew how to run a fire station and how to put the fire out. You could count on Maz to keep it "light" regardless of the situation. God´s Firehouse has a place for you brother. May God bless.
