Richard McGrath Esq. Obituary
Richard P. (Dick) McGrath, Esq., 94, beloved husband of Luisa (Sacco y Artze) McGrath, died on July 21, 2024 in Norwalk, CT. Born in Chicago, IL, the youngest of five children, to the late John Francis and Helen Leone (Hoyer) McGrath, he was also predeceased by his siblings, his daughter Deborah McGrath and his son-in-law, Ramon Guerrero.
An Honors graduate of Gonzaga High School, Georgetown University and Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review, he began his career as a corporate attorney at Hughes Hubbard & Reed (NY), then served as Corporate Counsel at Raytheon (MA) before joining Cummings & Lockwood (CT) in 1960, where he served as Head of the Corporate Department for many years. His clients included many well-known international and Fortune 500 companies, including Perkin-Elmer, as well as Dr. Howard Aiken, the early computing pioneer. He also served as Of Counsel at Murtha Cullina (CT) during his later career. He was very active in the Connecticut Bar Association, WESFACCA and Stamford Rotary Club, and was listed in Best Lawyers in America, "Who's Who in America" (Marquis) and "Who's Who in the World" (Marquis).
Dick was dedicated to many charitable causes. For over 21 years, he served as Secretary and General Counsel (pro bono) for the International Executive Service Corps, a nonprofit organization that fosters private sector development in the economically developing world. He was also a member of The Stamford Partnership, former President of the Fairfield County Council of the Boy Scouts of America and former Director and Vice Chairman of the Salvation Army.
Dick met his wife Luisa on a blind date in NYC and they were married in her home town of Havana, Cuba shortly after. During their 68-year marriage, they were each other's pride and joy. Dick and Luisa shared a passion for travel, exploring most of the world together over the decades, and throwing not-to-be-missed parties, where he could often be persuaded to sing Danny Boy in his beautiful tenor voice.
Dick was an avid golfer (and former Governor of Woodway Country Club), skier, life-long chess player and long-time member of the Wilton Writer's Group. He was a passionate scholar of Ancient Rome, a subject he studied and wrote about his entire life.
Dick's sense of humor, contagious laugh, quiet generosity and endless supply of Julius Caesar stories will be missed by his loving wife Luisa, their two daughters Lisa McGrath and Holly Guerrero, grandson Marcos Guerrero and a host of loving nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Memorial Contributions may be directed to Grace Cottage Foundation (Gracecottage.org) or the charity of your choice.
A Memorial Gathering / Celebration of his Life is being planned for September. Please check back for service updates
