With profound sadness we announce the passing of Richard Martin Monihan, Jr of Westfield, beloved husband, father, son, and brother on February 14, 2025. Rick was 62 years old. Raised by Richard Martin Monihan Sr. and Barbara McClatchy Clay in Germantown PA.
Rick attended Pocono Central Catholic High School. He continued his education, earning a bachelor's degree at Syracuse University, where he made lifelong friends in the Gamma Omicron chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. From there, Rick began a media career in New York City, starting at ABC and continuing through other media outlets ending his career with Premion. He proudly served as a mentor and board member at Future Now Foundation - a media mentorship organization. He also was a regular volunteer at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.
Rick had a bug for travel, spending formative college months in London, and traveling the globe with his family. He was a passionate Philadelphia Eagles & Phillies fan, and supporter of all things Syracuse Orange. Rick had a penchant for conversation. He loved discussing his beliefs, values, and point of view with anyone and everyone who was willing to join along with him. His summers were spent on the tennis court at Noma, and his winters with his nose stuck in history books.
Rick was a loving father & husband, and most recently celebrated his 32nd wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Shelagh.
He is survived by his loving wife Shelagh, his two incredibly handsome & intelligent sons Richard III "Trey" and John "Jack", his parents Barbra McClatchy Clay, Richard M Monihan Sr & Mary Lou Monihan, his brother Brian Monihan & wife Maureen, sister Sylvia Clay, sister Keri Monihan, sister Mary Clay, sister Hilary Monihan & husband John Nighswander, sister MegAnn Monihan, In-Laws Maryann and John Canavan, Kyle Canavan, his many nieces, nephews, friends, and adorable french bulldog, Fiona.

Rick is now 'slam dancing' in that mosh pit, in Heaven. Your wit, friendship and loyalty will surely be missed. Heaven has gained a great man. Until we meet again, Namaste.

Rick and I used to have the BEST discussions about Religion, comparing and contrasting different doctrines. Creation v. evolution. At times we spent hours discussing debating Aspects of Buddhism: As Syracuse weather is, we ended up trudging through about 2 ft of snow. . . .between shoveled paths, because we were going to follow the "middle path".

Rick always loved a debate. He was always well prepared and accepted the challenge with gusto. Politics, Religion, Economics were frequent topics. Rick had the ability to participate in a cerebral joust, dueling to the finish, after. . . he was Rick, once again. He rarely held a grudge. A good man, a solid brother.
