Richard "Rich" J. Mooney, age 78, longtime resident of Plainfield, IL since 2005, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Lightways Hospice in Joliet. He was born on December 31, 1946, in Berwyn, IL to the late Edward and Dorothy Mooney (nee Alexa). Rich was raised in Cicero and graduated from J. Sterling Morton East High School class of 1965.
Rich is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Christine Mooney (nee Bulicek). They met at a mutual friend's 16th birthday in 1966. That same night, he told his mother, "I found the girl I'm going to marry." Rich and Chris were indeed married on June 29,1968, at Our Lady of Charity in Cicero, IL.
Rich is survived by his loving children Nancy (James) Sinclair of Plainfield, IL, Richard Jr (Rhonda) of Downers Grove, IL, Deanna (John) Mueller of Palos Heights, IL, and Sharon (Nicholas) Reimer of Lockport, IL. Rich and Chris were further blessed with beautiful grandkids; Shannon (Joseph) Manning, Joseph, Fr. Christian and Genevieve Sinclair, Isabelle and Elisabeth Mooney, John Mueller, and Reid, Anastasia, Victoria, Magdalena, and Isla-Rose Reimer; cherished great grandchildren Amelia and Caroline Manning. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Dorothy, brothers Edward and David, sister Margaret "Margie" (Lenny) Mazzotti, brother-in-law Fred Bulicek and sister-in-law Shauna Bulicek. He is survived by his sister Dorothy "Dolly" (Paul) Seifert, brothers-in-law Rich (Sally) Bulicek, James Bulicek and sister-in-law Rosalynn "Roz" (Fred) Bulicek. Rich will always be lovingly known as "Uncle Dick" by the nieces and nephews he loved.
Rich worked in gear manufacturing but was a carpenter at heart. He spent much of his life doing part time remodeling work for clients, friends and family (especially his kids!) which he continued into retirement. Building something from nothing was his passion. He also loved to be outside enjoying God's creation, vacations in Tennessee, and would do anything for his family. His kids have fond memories of Dad singing and dancing with 'his honey' Christine in the kitchen, or Mom and Dad singing in the music group at St. Joseph in Downers Grove while they were growing up. Rich could rarely be spotted without a cup of coffee and a smile.
For those that would like to leave a lasting tribute in Rich's name. Memorial contributions may be made to Lightways Hospice 250 Water Stone Cir, Joliet, IL 60431 https://lightways.org/ or Alzheimer's Association 225 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603. https://www.alz.org/
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025, 4:00-8:00 PM at Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 15219 S. Joliet Rd. (Corners of Rt. 59 and Rt. 30), Plainfield, IL 60544.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 21, 10:30 AM at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 15629 S. Route 59, Plainfield, IL 60544, (815) 436-2651.
