John Mason passed away peacefully at his home in Plainfield, Illinois, on October 7, 2025, after living with Younger Onset Alzheimer's for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Michele (Simmons); his children, Tyler and Abby; his brother, Keith; sister-in-law, Janice Simmons; and his close friend, John "JD" DiNovo.
John approached life with optimism and gratitude-he often said he never had a bad day. For 34 years, he taught physical education and coached multiple sports at Orland Junior High, where he also founded an adaptive PE program that brought together students with disabilities and general education mentors. His passion for teaching extended far beyond the gym; he was committed to helping children grow into healthy, kind, and confident adults.
A devoted husband, father, and friend, John cherished time with his family. Summers were spent running along the Chicago lakefront, firing up the grill at the American Legion stand at the Adams County Fair, and training for more than 70 marathons and triathlons. His love for movement and community defined his days and inspired those around him.
John would like to be remembered as a caring teacher, a dedicated father and friend, and someone who made a difference in the lives of others.
A private service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, John would have appreciated a run with a friend, time spent with loved ones,
or a donation to one of the organizations close to his heart:
Lightways Hospice
Development Office
250 Water Stone Circle
Joliet, IL 60431
(Lightways provided compassionate support to John and his family during the final stage
of his journey.)
Without Warning (Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center)
Mail checks to:
Rush Office of Philanthropy

Chicago, IL 60673-1280
Please include "Without Warning" in the memo line.

Yesterday

To John´s Family my deepest sympathy, I had the privilege of teaching with John at OJH for many years! John was the kindest, most compassionate and loved teacher and friend! We shared many laughs, stories and he even was my mentor when I was asked to teach PE for a maternity leave! He is reunited in heaven with his buddy Tommy Helmuth! I lost my Mother to Alzheimer´s disease and I know how difficult it was to watch the struggle of losing him alittle more every day! May God watch over him and I know he is continuing helping people in heaven! My thoughts and prayers are with you all!
