Richard Smith Perusse

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Smith Perusse, who departed this life on August 24, 2024. Born to Joseph Stephen Perusse, Sr. and Marie Smith Perusse Reed, Richard led a life marked by warmth, friendship, and dedication. He was a proud graduate of Gulfport High School and furthered his education at Mississippi State University, where he developed a lifelong passion for the institution and its athletics.

Richard had a distinguished career at Mississippi Power and Light, which later became Entergy Mississippi, demonstrating his commitment and loyalty to his work and community. His colleagues and friends fondly remember him as a person who never met a stranger, embodying friendship and kindness in every interaction. Richard's friendly demeanor ensured that he was well-loved by many, and his presence will be profoundly missed.

An avid Mississippi State University fan, Richard enjoyed sports, particularly football, and spent many happy hours on the golf course or at the gym, where he found joy in maintaining an active lifestyle. His enthusiasm for sports was infectious, bringing smiles and camaraderie to those around him.

Richard is survived by his loving daughter, Angela Perusse Estes (James Robert); his brother, Joseph Stephen Perusse (Florence); his sister, Marie Elizabeth "Betty" Degraaf (Douglas); and his cherished grandchildren, Dr. Nicholas James Estes (Emily) and Lane Robert Estes. He is also remembered fondly by three nieces and one nephew along with their families, who carry on his legacy of love and connection.

While we grieve the loss of Richard, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with joy, laughter, and genuine affection for others. His memory will remain alive in the hearts of those who knew him, as he leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories and lasting friendships.

Services will be held Monday, October 14, 2024, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS. Visitation will begin at 10:15 a.m., with a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.
