Richard Charles "Dick" Sapone Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, in Bethel, Connecticut. Born on March 15, 1939, in New York, New York, Richard lived a life marked by dedication to family, service to his country, and a passion for adventure.
Richard attended Kingston High School in New York before enlisting in the United States Air Force. It was during his service that he was stationed in Condon, Oregon-a posting that would change the course of his life. There he met Judy Grugett, who would become the love of his life. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Richard and Judy were married by her mother, Minister Leah Grugett. The couple then returned to New York to begin their life together.
Professionally, Richard built a long-standing career with Allied Van Lines/Shepards Warehouse. His work eventually took him across the country to California, where he played a key role in opening a new warehouse. After many years in the moving business, Richard retired and fulfilled a dream by having a house built in Oregon-returning to the place where he and Judy had first met.
Richard's love for his family was unwavering. He never missed an opportunity to express how proud he was of them. He is survived by his children: Doreen (Kevin) Tallent; Judy Jacobs; Erma (Don) Principe; and Richard (Theresa) Sapone Jr. He also leaves behind his brothers Louis and Charles (Dorothy) Sapone and sister Marie Guglielmo.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Judy Sapone; his parents Louis and Angelina Sapone; his brothers Gerard Sapone and Danny Guglielmo; and his sister Jeanie Krom.
Outside of work and family life, Richard pursued many interests with enthusiasm. A devoted auto racing fan and participant, he spent many years racing his silver Dodge Charger at Dover Dragstrip-earning numerous trophies along the way. He also practiced Karate and enjoyed weight lifting. In later years, he found joy in crafting wooden toys for his grandchildren and friends-a hobby that combined creativity with heartfelt generosity.
Richard's legacy is one of strength, devotion, and enduring love for those closest to him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 6, 2025, from 11 AM to 1 PM at Bethel Funeral Home 215 Greenwood Avenue. There will be a church service following the Celebration of Life at two o'clock at The First Congregational Church at 46 Main Street Bethel CT. After which a luncheon will be held downstairs at the church.

You were the best Dad ever. I am so incredible lucky to have had you as my dad. You NEVER waivered in your love for us all. You showed us what real, good parents are. I will be forever grateful for that. Please give mom a big kiss for me. God, I miss you so much already.
