Richard Alvin Schau, 89, from Shadyside, Ohio passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, at the Shadyside Healthcare Center in Shadyside, Ohio.

He was born on August 15, 1936, in Wheeling, West Virginia, a son to the late Chester and Edith (Toland) Schau.

Richard pursued his academic ambitions with dedication, earning a Bachelor's degree from West Liberty University followed by a Master's degree from the University of Dayton. His professional career was marked by his long-standing role as a Guidance Counselor, a position he held with great commitment until his retirement. Through his work, he touched the lives of many students, offering them guidance and support during their formative years. He was a respected member of the Ohio County Teachers Association, where he formed lasting friendships with his colleagues.

Outside of his professional life, Richard found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid enthusiast of crossword puzzles and took pride in maintaining his yard. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His beloved dog, Gaither, held a special place in his heart and was surely waiting to greet him once more.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Darla (Spivla) Schau of Shadyside; children, Pam Mitchell, Todd (Jennifer) Schau all of Shadyside; grandchildren, Alyssa Davis-Wiery, Tyler (Julia) Davis, Breanne (Kyle) Arrington, Kaitlyn (Tre) Saunders, Peyton (Jim) Roth, Lehney Schau; great grandchildren, Laila, Mila, Tyler, Gus, Finn, Bennett, Lydia, Jameson, Kace; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are to be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home 3900 Central Avenue, Shadyside, Ohio on Saturday, September 27, 2025 from 11:00am until time of service at 1:00pm with Rev. Phil Bliss officiating. Burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia.
