WEAVERVILLE – Richard Jennings Shuford, age 85, of Weaverville passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at his home.

Mr. Shuford was born on August 30, 1939, in Buncombe County, where he returned to live for the past fifty years. He served in the United States Navy, and early in his career worked in forestry, having received a degree from West Virginia University. He also earned a degree in commercial art and design. A talented artist, he made many hand painted signs for businesses, and used his incredible woodworking skills in many projects. Richard worked many years and retired as a right of way agent with CP&L and then Duke Energy. He enjoyed playing the banjo, fishing, and reading. He was a member of Barnardsville Baptist Church.

Richard was the son of the late Thel Jennings Shuford and Helen Hyatt Shuford and was also preceded in death by his sister, Eula Mae Savage.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Hopkins Shuford whom he married in 1971; son, Brad Shuford and wife Collin; grandchild, Drew Shuford; sister, Suzanne Lawless of Tennessee; brother-in-law, Earl Savage of Delaware; niece, Amy Lawless (Brian Herndon), nephew, Mike Lawless, and nephew, Bryan Savage (Jennifer).

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 28, 2025, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US Hwy 70 W, Black Mountain, NC 28711, with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial contribution to Barnardsville Baptist Church, 1639 Barnardsville Hwy, Barnardsville, NC 28709, the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675, or Four Seasons Hospice Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC 28731.
