Richard Glen Summerlin

 

July 2nd, 2023, Richard Summerlin, 63, of Waxahachie, TX, passed away at Texas Oncology-Presbyterian Cancer Center in Dallas with his beloved wife Brenda Summerlin at his side. He bravely battled colon cancer for over 15 years.

The youngest of two, Richard was born on February 1st, 1960 to Kenneth and Arlene Summerlin in Mt. Pleasant, TX. Richard grew up in Mt. Pleasant and spent his free time working on his grandparent's farm, clearing fences, herding cows, or repairing their barn. His brother, Roger, and his cousins got into many shenanigans on the farm. 

 

Richard went on to study Accounting at the University of Texas in Arlington and joined Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor fraternity. He started his first job at a public accounting firm, KPMG. He then became a certified public accountant and a certified government finance officer. He went on to work for the City of Dallas for 16 years and then the City of Duncanville for 14 years, becoming the city's Director of Finance.

In 2010, Richard met Brenda at an Olive Garden in Waco, TX. After years of becoming close friends, Brenda and Richard married on May 4, 2013. Richard is survived by his wife, Brenda, 3 children, Amanda, Lauren, and Erin, his stepdaughter, Jessica, 2 granddaughters, Alexis and Whitley, his brother, Roger, his parents, and his former spouse, Donna.

In 2021, Richard retired, spending his time gardening in his backyard and developing his business, Summerlin Soaps with Brenda. Richard was an avid lover of fishing, taking care of animals, riding his tractor, working on cars, being with his family, ministering to his community, and telling dad jokes. He ministered to many people - friends, family, and strangers. He loved Jesus and enjoyed praying for anyone if they let him. Richard was also one of the longest-standing board members of the Vinyard Church in Arlington, TX.

Services will be held at The Vineyard Church in Arlington on July 22nd at 10:30 am CDT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Vineyard Church of Arlington Benevolence Fund, an organization Richard felt strongly about.
