Rita Blackdeer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Buswell Funeral Home on Feb. 12, 2026.
Rita Mae Blackdeer "Aahut'aiga" (Raised Wing), age 82, of Black River Falls, WI, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Pineview Care Center in Black River Falls.

Anyone who knew Rita knew she was a talker, a storyteller, a skilled butcher and cook, and someone who gave so much of herself to others. She carried knowledge, humor, and generosity in equal measure, and she shared them freely with family and community.

Rita played a meaningful role in many of our lives. For those who grew up around her, some of the earliest and most cherished memories come from time spent at the hunting shack and from visits to Joe and Rita's home on Brice Prairie. She made those places feel warm, welcoming, and alive with story.

One often-shared memory is of Rita taking children into the woods while the hunters were out, teaching them to look for wintergreen berries and tea and to read animal tracks in the snow. These quiet teachings became beloved yearly traditions, shaping how many learned to see and move in the land.

Rita was present for important coming-of-age moments as well. She stood alongside family when first deer were taken, a significant step for young Ho-Chunk boys, and sometimes young women.

Wherever Joe went, Rita went too, their partnership steady and enduring. After Joe's passing, Rita continued to uphold his place and responsibilities within the community and ceremony.

We grieve Rita's passing with heavy hearts, yet we also take comfort in knowing she is reunited with Joe and with all our relatives who have gone before her. Her voice, her teachings, and her presence remain with us.

She will be missed, remembered, and honored.

Visitation for Rita will take place Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at the Mission Community Center from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Decorah Cemetery. The family sincerely thanks the Warrior Clan for assisting. Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls is assisting the family with arrangements.
