Rita Gail Smith

Rita Gail Smith, age 69, of Prospect, Kentucky, passed away on July 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 13, 1955, Rita lived a life filled with love, laughter, and amazing strength.
Rita is survived by her devoted husband of over 50 years, Charles "Charlie" Eugene Smith, her beloved daughter Reanna Smith-Hamblin, her brother Steven Wilson, brother-in-law Tinker Smith, and mother-in-law Jane Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doris and Sylvester Wilson, and her sister, Rhonda Wilson-Montgomery.
Rita and Charlie's love story began over five decades ago at a McDonald's in Shively, Kentucky - both behind the wheels of their own Mustangs. Charlie looked over, smiled, and said, "I like your car." Six months later, they were married, beginning a lifetime of partnership, family, adventure, and mutual admiration.
Rita had a deep love for her family, animals-especially her puppies and fish. She also loved history, and travel. She and Charlie explored many places together, and after every trip, Rita would ask, "What was your favorite thing about the trip?" Charlie's answer never changed: "Watching you smile."
Together, Rita and Charlie built and operated River City Enterprises, where Rita's steady hand and clear-headed wisdom helped guide their success. She was the quiet force behind the scenes, always keeping things on track with grace and care.
Rita's warmth, intelligence, and joyful spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter-and memories that will be cherished forever.
She now joins her parents and sister in heaven, no doubt smiling down and continuing to guide her loved ones as she always did-with that quiet strength and a beautiful heart.
She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
Services will be held at Ratterman Brothers East Louisville Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, KY 40243. Visitation is from 1 pm to 8 pm Friday, July 11, 2025; Another visitation will be held at 9 am on Saturday, July 12, 2025. Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, with burial to follow.
