Robert Charles Besecker, 75, of Stroud Township died Sunday, May 1, 2022 at the Lehigh Valley Hospice House-Pocono, Surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Phyllis (Koerner) Besecker. They would have been married 54 years on September 21st of this year.
Born on May 29, 1946 in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of the late Clinton LeRoy Besecker and Helen (Arnold) Besecker Fable and the stepson of Ida (Mae) Besecker. He was of the Catholic faith.
He attended St. Matthews Elementary School and Stroudsburg High School. After high school he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War. He received the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star. He was very proud of his veterans flag on Main Street in Stroudsburg where he grew up.
Bob and Phyllis purchased the Lackawanna Diner located on North Ninth Street in 1978, renaming in Besecker's Diner. Later they purchased the diner at its current location on North Fifth Street in Stroud Township.
In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting with his cousins and friends having many laughs together. He also enjoyed having a Miller Lite or two ON ICE at Rudy's Tavern.
Bob was a sports enthusiast. He was a member of Harker's Hollow, Great Bear and Shawnee County Clubs. He was a die hard Yankees fan, even naming his son after Mickey Mantle. He was a basketball referee, serving in the PIAA Stroudsburg chapter. He was also a baseball and basketball coach and umpired softball games. Bob also enjoyed watching his granddaughters softball games.
Everyone knew when Bob forgot someone's name, he would call them "Old Bud" or "Hon". Bob loved his community and was a sports and business mentor to many area youth. He had a love for dogs and almost always had one in his home.
Always the life of the party, he used to impersonate Elvis and was known for his large Masters, Fourth of July and New Years Eve parties. He was also a follower of the music group Dovell's
In addition to his wife Phyllis, he is survived by a son, Michael "Mickey" Besecker of Stroudsburg; daughter, Amanda and husband John Sandy of Stroudsburg; sister, Patricia Rodgers of Stroudsburg; brother, Joseph Besecker of San Francisco, CA; two granddaughters, Hannah Besecker of Stroudsburg and Payton Besecker of Bethlehem; two nephews, Philip Bettini and wife Debbie of Stroudsburg and Steve Bettini and wife Nancy of Santa Clarita, CA.
Services will be held on Monday, May 9, from the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg with viewing beginning at 10:00AM followed by a prayer service at 12:30PM. Burial will follow at Laurelwood Cemetery.
