Robert A. Bohyer

Robert A. Bohyer, 101 years of age, of Elkhart, Indiana, went home to glory on February 12, 2026, at Hubbard Hill Living Wisdom Community. Bob was born on January 6, 1925, in Lima, Ohio, to parents Albert and Mae Bohyer, who preceded him in death.

He was also preceded in death by sisters, Wilma and Florence, and brother, Harold. A longtime resident of Lima, Ohio, Bob graduated from South High School, and then served in the Army Air Force during World War II, flying 35 missions as a tail-gunner in B-17's.

After the war, Bob married Mary Kathryn (Torchy) Helser, who preceded him to the Lord in 2002. He worked most of his life as a block operator for Penn-Central and Conrail Railroads. Bob had many interests, some of which included: gardening (specifically his rose gardens), tending to his other indoor plants, painting scenery landscapes, dancing, and watching sports. Bob especially enjoyed baseball, and he played in a league here in Lima when he was younger. He rooted for the Cincinnati Reds, as well as the Atlanta Braves for a time. Bob loved all animals, but dogs and horses were his favorite. His children describe him as a "fun dad", whose wit and playfulness filled their childhoods with fond memories. Bob enjoyed scrabble, playing cards, and doing crossword puzzles. Bob cared about others and had a genuine interest in how people were doing. His sense of humor and kind, polite personality left a legacy to be remembered.

He is survived by a son, David (Janis) Bohyer of Elgin, Illinois and by his daughters, Mary Margaret (Joe) Van Wagner of Seminole, Florida; and Rebecca (Timothy) Yazel of Mishawaka, Indiana. Bob and Mary were blessed with 8 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren!

Robert and Mary were longtime members of Lima Baptist Temple in Lima, Ohio, and were very active in churches in other states. Bob's crowning achievement was his clear and strong faith in Jesus Christ, in Whose presence he now lives and rejoices!

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima, Ohio. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 PM on April 11, 2026, at Hubbard Hill in Elkhart, Indiana.
