Robert Preston Carberry
Robert Preston Carberry, born March 6, 1941, in San Angelo, Texas, to Preston T. and Edna O. Carberry, passed away June 29, 2025 surrounded by his family. Robert attended San Angelo and Lake View Public Schools. Graduated from Lake View High School in 1959 and San Angelo Jr. College in 1961. He then attended the University of Honolulu, Southwest Texas State University, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964. In 1965, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy upon completion of Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. After advanced training in Philadelphia, PA, he reported on board the USS Valley Forge LPH-8 in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, for three years of service in Vietnam and the South China Sea.
Upon completion of his military service, Lt. Carberry returned to Texas and bought a home in Dallas. He then joined the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) as a Personnel Manager. After training in Okinawa, Japan, he returned to Vietnam for a six-month assignment to the Long Bien Post and was then promoted to Chief Employee Management Section, Headquarters Vietnam Regional Exchange, Saigon. In 1971, he was transferred to the Korea Regional Exchange in Seoul, South Korea, as Supervisor, Employee Management Section Specialist. In 1972, he was transferred to headquarters, AAFES,
Dallas, Texas, as an Employee Utilization Specialist in the Career Management Branch.
In 1973, he married Young Ja Choi, and in 1974, he accepted a position with Bell Helicopter International in Tehran, Iran, as a Senior Industrial Relations Representative. His two daughters were born in Tehran: Kathleen Carberry, born October 24, 1974, and Cassandra Carberry, born November 16, 1976. Both girls were born as "U.S. Citizens born abroad." In 1979, he completed his assignment in Iran as Deputy Director of Personnel. He was a principal coordinator of the evacuation and settlement of the company contracts pursuant to the Iranian Revolution. In April of 1980, he was hired as Superintendent of Manpower Services for Williams International for an assignment in Nigeria, seconded to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. In November of 1980, he joined McDonnell Douglas Services as a Personnel Manager and was assigned to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in January 1981. Subsequently, he was transferred to Taif, Saudi Arabia, and in 1986 was promoted to Director of Personnel and reassigned to Program Headquarters in Riyadh. He retired from McDonald Douglas Services in November of 1996 and returned to
Dallas, Texas, and in July 1998, bought a house in Pecan Plantation, Granbury, Texas. He also continued acquisition of rental houses in the Dallas and Fort Worth area and was active in the management of those properties until 2014, when he sold the Timbergrove home in Dallas and maintained his home in Granbury, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Young Ja, and their daughters, Kathleen Carberry and her husband, Michael Johnson, married on the 2nd of August 2003, and Cassandra Carberry and her husband, Marc Segers, married on the 8th of March 2008, and his grandchildren, Brigitte Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Juniper Segers, and Cy Segers. He also leaves behind his sister, Jean Bailey, her husband Bill, and their daughter Lori.
The preceding portion of the obituary was written by Robert himself. No one who knew him will be surprised that he left nothing to chance but instead prepared for everything. He was a great patriot who loved and served his country. He was a tremendously loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a self-made man who worked incredibly hard and lived his life with great determination and purpose, creating a legacy of love and family.
