Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home & Crematory - Statesboro on Jan. 28, 2026.
Robert (Evan) Hunter (60) of
Statesboro, Ga. passed away on January 25, 2026, surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Caroline Hunter, of 12 years, his three beautiful stepdaughters, Tiffany Esworthy (William), Jessica Bryan, and Kimberly Napoline (Andrew). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sharon Joyce (Tom), brother-in-law John P. McAleer Jr. (Stephanie), and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Hunter and Jean Hayes-Williams (Russell) and his sister, Emma May Hunter.
Evan attended Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia where he played football under the direction of Coach Haney and Mickey Sullivan. He was also part of band company. There, he became part of a brotherhood of friendships that stretched throughout his high school years and in the 40+ years since his graduation.
Evan had both a passion for baseball and a love of helping young people. That passion led him to become an umpire for Little League Baseball and softball for over 18 years where he mentored children of all ages. During this time, he also served as a Football officiant.
Once an avid surfer and lifelong lover of the water, Evan proudly served as a lifeguard in Fenwick Island, Delaware. His passion for water inspired him to master lifesaving skills and take pride in being part of something greater than himself in ensuring the safety and protection of others.
Evan spent two years in the Army during the gulf war, serving during wartime and stationed at Camp Zama, Japan. There, he received wartime accommodation medals, including, but not limited to, an excellent rifle marksman.
In his later years, Evan enjoyed vacationing in Marathon, Florida Keys, where he and his wife made lots of friends, such has Ben (Connie) (affectionately known as his "brother from another mother") from all the corners of the world who would often coordinate to be there at the same time to celebrate and enjoy each other.
Evan held many special bonds and close relationships with the people in his life. In particular, he had a special bond with the people his wife, Caroline, worked with at Select Precast, LLC in
Pembroke, Ga. He also especially loved his neighborhood family in Statesboro and appreciated their friendship and support.
Lastly, Evan's wish was to take a moment and thank someone very special to him - his sister-in-law Sharon Joyce. Evan and Sharon developed a relationship in which they loved each other unconditionally, a heartfelt bond that was beautiful and truly unbreakable. They were silly and laughed hard together - all the while realizing how special she was to him. She would cook him special meals in advance so that he would be able to still have something she cooked. She dropped everything in her life to make sure she was here whenever he needed her and did everything, she could to make sure his last days were filled with her love for him.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of life will be held in Spring 2026. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send any contributions on behalf of Robert Hunter to the Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donehoo St.,
Statesboro, GA. 30458.
