Robert Morris Lockwood age 79, of New Rochelle, NY passed away peacefully at home on April 1, 2024. Robert was born on March 23, 1945 to George and Katherine Lockwood in New Rochelle, NY. Robert graduated high school from Lawrence Academy in Groton MA, where he was captain of the wrestling team and state champion for 2 years. He went on to study History at Cornell University in Ithaca NY. After graduating, he started his lifelong career at Lockwood Trade Journal company in New York, NY. From an enthusiastic salesman, he progressed to president of the company. In 1965, Robert married Virginia Mary Emmerson in New Rochelle NY. Robert and Virginia had 2 children, Robert and Renee.
Robert had a lifelong passion for sailing. As a child, he spent summers sailing with his parents and 4 siblings on the east coast from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine. Later, Robert, Virginia and their children spent summers cruising on their own boat from Long Island Sound to Maine. As an avid and skilled racer Robert enjoyed racing small sail boats, particularly frostbiting on Long Island Sound in the winter. In retirement, Robert found a new sailing community in Singles Under Sail. He enjoyed sharing his love of the water and introducing people to sailing. He began teaching sailing as a teenager for Sutton Manor in New Rochelle. Robert had plans to teach sailing again this summer to children in small sail boats and adults on his Beneteau.
Robert was predeceased by Virginia, his parents, and brother Fred. He is survived by his sisters Katherine Hayslip, Barbara Lockwood, his brother George Lockwood, daughter Renee Lockwood-Pansire and her husband John, and son Robert Lockwood and his wife Paige and their children Blaire and John.
Services will be held at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home in Hawthorne NY. Visiting hours will be on Friday April 5 from 10:00am tp 1:00pm followed by a burial service at Kensico Cemetery.
