Robert Louer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allwood Funeral Home - Clifton on Oct. 22, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Robert (Bob) Crane Louer, Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, October 20th, 2025. Born on March 28th, 1936 in Newark, NJ, he grew up in Nutley, NJ, where he developed a lifelong love for music. He often reminisced about the thrill of watching Harry James play the trumpet at the Meadowbrook in Cedar Grove, peeking through the window from the parking lot on his father's shoulders.
Bob attended West Virginia Wesleyan and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University, earning a B.S. degree in chemistry. He proudly served his country by enlisting in the Navy and dedicating 30 years to the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Hospital Corpsman, retiring as a Senior Chief Petty Officer.
Music was always a big part of Bob's life. Bob played trumpet and in high school formed and led Buddy Louer and the Rhythmaires, an instrumental jazz and Dixieland combo, which he also did in college. He played with wedding bands and often shared stories about the challenge of performing at Polish weddings, playing polkas into the wee hours of the morning until his lips bled. He gave his love for music to his family, inspiring generations to appreciate its joy.
Professionally, Bob worked at Warner Chilcott and then Hoffman-La Roche for over 30 years as a validation engineer and water treatment specialist. After retiring, he devoted himself to woodworking and refinishing furniture, expanding his hobby as a business in which he referred to himself as "Bob, the Rocker-fella".
Bob cherished summer family vacations in Maine, camping on Somes Sound on Mt. Desert Island near Bar Harbor. He entertained his grandchildren, sometimes unwillingly, surprising them (and himself) by blowing out his birthday candles-and occasionally his teeth, too.
Bob is predeceased by his parents Robert C Louer, Sr. and Gladys R Louer and his former wife, Marjorie A. Louer. He is survived by his daughter Karen Richards and husband David, Sr. of Yardley, PA, his three sons, Robert and wife Carrie of Princeton, James and wife Laura of Clifton, and William of Cedar Grove, his nephew James H. Sullivan, IV, and his niece Carol Sullivan, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral 10AM Monday at Allwood Funeral Home, 660 Allwood Road, Clifton, NJ 07012 followed by interment at East Ridgelawn Cemetery. Viewing 4-7PM Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: International Students, Inc. (Account #5500) P.O. Box C, Colorado Springs, CO, 80901-3000 or https://internationalstudents.org/team/louers/
