EAST HERKIMER - Robert James Lowell, age 96, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, August 28, 2024 surrounded by his loving family at the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Ilion.
He was born on July 20, 1928, in Herkimer, one of nine children to the late Raymond and Stella (Tarbox) Lowell. He was a lifelong Herkimer resident, and graduated from Herkimer High School. On October19,1950, he was inducted into the US Army serving two years of Active Status during the Korean Conflict. In 1952, he transferred to the Army Reserve and was honorably discharged on October 29,1956. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Arleta Avis Cress. Together they made their home in East Herkimer and raised a family of four sons and one daughter. Robert was a self-employed contractor and he retired in the1990's. He was well-known and well-regarded by his numerous repeat clients and their families. After retirement, Robert never really put down his hammer. He spent his days helping his family and friends build and remodel their homes, and was always available when he was needed for his expertise and advice.
Robert was a quiet man who devoted his life to his family. In his younger days he enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. He was always playing games with his kids and their friends and later with his grandkids as well. He loved to tease and joke with them, and they all loved it when "Pop" made them laugh.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife of seventy-two years, Artleta, and their five children; Stephen and his wife Deborah of Gulf Breeze, FL, Nancy Baker and her husband Bernard of East Herkimer, Scott and his wife Sylvia of East Herkimer, Kevin, and David both of Herkimer along with eight cherished grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. He is also survived by a brother James and two sisters, Frances Castella and Ellen Palmenterie. as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Charles and four sisters, Marion Taylor, Edna Reitz, Pearl Swart, and Betty Boyer.
Funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Memorial Donations in Robert's name may be made to Habitat for Humanity or The Wounded Warrior Project.
