Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home and Cremation- AshevilleRobert "Max" Maxwell Reed, born on November 20, 1929, in Whittier, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026, in Candler, North Carolina. He was a beloved member of his community and leaves behind a legacy of warmth, musical talent, and cherished memories.
Max dedicated over 30 years of his professional life to Square D before retiring, a testament to his work ethic and commitment. His education began at Swain County High School in Bryson City, where his character and interests began to take shape.
As a longtime musician, Max was known for his remarkable banjo playing in the Asheville area. His love for music was complemented by his enthusiasm for sports, having played baseball and softball during his younger years. He also shared his passion for the game by coaching little league baseball, fostering the love of sport in the next generation.
Max was a proud member of the Berea Baptist Church, where he spent many years, and currently worshiped at Freedom Baptist Church. His life was marked by a strong sense of community and service, traits that endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his sons, Jerry Reed and Chris Reed; his grandson, Cody Reed; and his beloved sisters, Nelda Cairns and Nayda Bailey, along with her husband George. Max was also a cherished uncle to his niece and nephews: David Bailey, Beth Cairns, and Edmond Reed.
Max was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 71 years, Clara Belle Reed, who departed this life on November 19, 2024; as well as his parents, Jack Hood Reed and Edith Childers Reed. He was also mourned by the loss of his sister, Freda Brown; and his brothers: Harlan Reed, Garth Reed, and Eugene Reed.
Max's memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home, located at 1428 Patton Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina, 28806.
As we gather to honor his memory, we celebrate a life filled with love, music, and an unwavering spirit that touched many lives.
