Robert Rossman Moore, longtime resident of Cumberland, passed away on December 17, 2024.
Bob was born May 22, 1925 in Hudson, New York, and in later years would joke that the town was bookended by two cement factories, putting gravel dust in the air no matter which way the wind blew.
Like so many young men of that time, his life was permanently changed by the advent of World War Two. Navy Ensign Robert Moore served on a transport vessel in 1945, bringing American soldiers back from China. Bob always felt lucky to have just missed the shooting war, and also grateful to the military for the opportunity to expand his education. Under the GI Bill, he studied at Iowa State, Dartmouth, RPI, and Syracuse.
One day Bob walked into an ice cream shop in upstate New York and was served by Alice May Lare, whose wide smile and blonde hair he admired. They married in 1953 and had five children, settling in Cumberland in 1966. Bob worked at Amica Insurance for more than 30 years.
Bob loved to play games and have fun, especially with his kids. His idea of a perfect birthday was taking all the kids to an amusement park, or biking to the beach for ice cream and hot dogs. The whole family cherishes memories of trips to Block Island and summer vacations in Plymouth. He loved to be anywhere near the water, something all his children have inherited. Bob also enjoyed fishing, the Muppets, and baseball. Worried that he would never see his beloved Red Sox win a championship, he was beyond delighted when they took it all in 2004 (and then three more besides).
Bob remained devoted to Alice, who passed away in 2009. They shared a second home in Florida that gave them great joy. He was a devout Christian and faithful churchgoer, and loved by all for his steadiness, decency, and good humor. He is survived by his five children - Stephen Moore, Ross Moore, Suzanne Martin, Marianne Gilmore, Joanne Heintzelman; five grandchildren Samantha Martin, Jenna Martin, Michael Moore Alaska Heintzelman and Brianna Brown; and one great-grandchild, Cleo Martin.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 2, 2025 in the West Ghent Rural Cemetery, County Road 22, Ghent, New York.
