Robert Roegner Obituary

Robert Roegner

October 22, 1948 - April 11, 2025

Federal Way, Washington - Bob Roegner was born October 22nd, 1948, in Tacoma Washington and passed away on April 11th, 2025.

Bob graduated from Wilson High School and earned his BA and MA from Pacific Lutheran University. Following graduation, he worked for the Washington State Employment Security Office in Auburn.

Bob eventually moved to Auburn, where he began his long public service career. In Auburn he was elected to the city council followed by three terms as the Mayor of the City of Auburn. While Mayor, he represented the county's suburban cities in negotiations that led to significant policies that would govern how King County and its cities managed growth. He was also involved in the creation of the Regional Transit Authority, now known as Sound transit, helping to bring commuter rails service through South King County. Bob also served a term as President of the Association of Washington Cities.

Following his time as Mayor, Bob served as Deputy Director of the King County Department of Assessments and later as the Director of King County Records, Elections and Licensing Division.

After his retirement, Bob volunteered and served in a variety of positions; including 10 years on the Highline Community College Board of Trustees, as well as, the Board for the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce, and the Boys and Girls Club, where he mentored many young people. He was also active in his church, first at Messiah Lutheran in Auburn, and then at Calvary Lutheran in Federal Way. Over the past 15 years Bob wrote a political column for the Federal Way Mirror, which he thoroughly enjoyed, both the research and the creative challenge.

Bob was honored to have a park in Auburn named after him (1993), and to be presented with the keys to the City of Federal Way (2023). As noted by many, Bob had a passion for community and love for both the cities of Auburn and Federal Way. He was highly ethical, knowledgeable, personable, and a great public servant. However, Bob was not all business. Bob enjoyed his family, golfing, and was a dedicated Washington Huskies fan, seldom missing a football game.

Bob leaves behind his mother Kathleen Creso, son Jeffery, daughter Janai (Nate), and grandchildren; Ella, Quinn, Athena, Cooper, and Natalie.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31st, at 3:00, at Messiah Lutheran Church -410 H St. NE, Auburn. Donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Federal Way, at 30815 8th Ave S, Federal Way, WA 98003 or to a charity of your choice. Bob touched many lives, and he will be missed by many.

Bob and my older brother were great friends and enjoyed both a close personal and professional relationship. Over the years, I got to know Bob as we enjoyed playing a few rounds of golf. I so admired his intelligence, sincerity, sense of humor, and love of the Huskies. The Race is over and you ran it well.

Bob was my neighbor on Lenore Drive. We were in choir and swing choir together at Wilson. I have great memories of a caring guy. So very sorry to hear of his passing.
