Jacobs Funeral Home, Inc. of Iron RiverRobert W. Salonen, 81, of Crystal Falls, MI, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at U.P. Health System-Marquette surrounded by family and friends.
Born on September 24, 1943, in Ironwood, MI, Robert was the son of the late Wayne and Linda (Eerikainen) Salonen. He graduated from Bessemer High School with the class of 1961. He then earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University and master’s degrees from both the University of Oregon and Northern Michigan University.
Robert married Betsy Hale on August 24, 1968, in Gladstone, MI. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in 2024.
He spent his career as a math teacher for West Iron County Public Schools from 1965-1996. After over 30 years of teaching, he found enjoyment working for George Young’s Golf Course on the grounds crew.
Robert was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls where he was the chairman of the PPRC Committee. He volunteered on the National Ski Patrol for 60 years spending most of that time with the Ski Brule Ski Patrol. Robert was also a member of Friends of Camp Batawagama and the Crystal Falls Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed many hobbies including golfing, hunting, fishing, skiing, reading, and spending time with his family. He was often overheard talking fondly about his grandchildren and their achievements.
Robert is survived by his wife, Betsy; daughters, Amy Hines of Traverse City, MI and Christy (Jeff) Provost of Marquette, MI; sister, Sue (Richard) Sigel of Knife River, MN; grandchildren, Joey and Haley Provost and Jeff and Taylor Hines (Chad Bruce); extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls, MI. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Vicky Prewitt to officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Friends of Camp Batawagama http://www.friendsofcampbatawagama.com or The Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls, MI.
