It is with deep and abiding sadness that we share the passing of our father, Robert "Bob" Joseph Schentrup, of Alachua, Florida. Bob, or "Old Bob" as he was affectionately known to all his grandchildren, passed away on November 2, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by loving family.
Bob was born on March 31, 1935, in Evansville, Indiana, the son of Ferdinand and Ann Debes Schentrup. He was the first and only son, and the second of six children. Bob had five sisters: Rosemary, Donna, Suzanne, Martha, and Ruth.
Growing up, Bob worked closely with his father, Ferd, at the grocery store the family owned. After high school, Bob joined the army where he served for two years, including time in Germany. During his time in Germany, he had an audience with Pope Pius XII, a highlight of his time in Europe. After returning home from military service, Bob attended the University of Evansville before traveling to South Florida where he settled in 1957.
In Hollywood, Florida, Bob met the love of his life, Martha Marie Cote. After a whirlwind romance, they married in the summer of '69. Bob and Martha were married until his passing, an inspiring 55 years. Bob and Martha have four sons: Michael, Daniel, Philip and Joseph.
Professionally, Bob managed and operated several different businesses during his time in South Florida. All of his children worked at the businesses he managed, starting part time as early as the age of 5! Growing up, we all spent a lot of time with our father, at work.
Bob retired at the age of 63. Once retired, Bob found great joy and satisfaction in perfecting his yard and gardens. Bob also believed in giving back to the Church and spent countless hours volunteering and landscaping at Little Flower Catholic Church in Hollywood with his wife Martha. Even after Bob and Martha moved in with Mike and Denise, he continued to find joy and happiness in the garden.
Bob was a dedicated husband and father who provided a good life for his wife and children. He was also a devoted Christian who strived daily to live his faith. His example as a husband, father, and Christian, will have a lasting impact on many who knew him best. As a grandfather, Old Bob enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and always took the time to build and tinker with them when they visited. Additionally, he helped care for Robert, Carmen and Evelyn who also resided in Hollywood with their parents, Phil and April. Finally, he was blessed to have three great grandchildren.
Preceding Bob in death are his parents; sisters Rosemary and Ruth; and granddaughter, Carmen.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; children: Michael, Daniel, Philip and Joseph; grandchildren: Joseph, Jacob, Nicholas, Michael, Abigail, Collin, Christian, Chloe, Robert, Evelyn, Ena, Maximilian, Johanna and Linnea Schentrup; great-grandchildren: Matthew, Issac and Jaedyn; sisters: Donna, Martha and Suzanne.
