Robert Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 23, 2026.
Robert Peter Smith Jr., Age 79, of Avon Lake, Ohio passed away peacefully Wednesday February 18th, 2026. He was born on January 5, 1947, in Lakewood Ohio. Bob was the middle son of three to the late Robert and Norma Jean Smith (nee Williams). He was preceded in death by his brothers Douglas and Bradley.

Bob attended Lakewood High School, class of 1965. He went on to attend The Ohio State University, where he played football as part of the 1968 National Championship team. After graduation he taught at Bay Village High School for over 15 years as part of the business/OWE program. He later owned and operated New Castle Roofing and Home Improvement in Avon Lake. Bob retired in 2016.

Bob-known to many of his friends and teammates as "Big Bob," "Buckeye Bob," or "Rock"-loved sharing stories from his years as a player, fan, and lifelong supporter of Buckeye football. He spent many Saturdays attending games at The Shoe, with sports being one of his greatest passions in life. That passion continued watching his children and grandchildren participate in their many activities. If Bob couldn't attend in person, he was always the first to call and ask how the game or event went, cheering them on every step of the way.

Later in life, Bob discovered a passion for the arts and became an avid carver, woodworker, and painter. Bob was always delighted in lending a helping hand to his many friends and neighbors. Most of all he enjoyed his monthly poker games with his neighborhood friends for 50+ years.

Bob leaves behind his three sons, Matthew Smith (April), Daniel Smith (Anne), and Michael "Scott" Smith (Amanda), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Connor, Addison, Trenton, Grant, Ava, Annabel, and Parker.

Bob elected cremation by Busch Crematory, so there will be no viewing service. A celebration of life is being planned in his honor at a later date.
