Roberta was born in Boise and grew up in various places in Ada County in a large family. She was a strong-willed woman whose strength carried her through many challenges throughout her life from several serious injuries and illnesses as a child, the loss of her brother, Jackie, in a fire; the loss of her father when she was 12; to raising a large family as an Air Force wife, traveling to different states and countries and often spending weeks or years tending the home fires as her sweetheart George served where the military sent him. She met George in Boise while he was stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base. They quickly fell in love and were married, starting their traveling adventure. They traveled back and forth across the nation (usually in a station wagon loaded with kids). They even lived far from home in New Foundland, Canada and England.
After retirement they moved to Oregon for a while. Later, they raised the second half of their family in Shoshone. For nearly 20 years after that they lived in Garden Valley in the last home George built for her so she could live in her beloved mountains. After a six month stint in Karcher Estates they returned to John Day where they bought a small but nice home to finish their life together.
She was a small person with a big personality. She loved music, her gardens, cake decorating, puzzles, games, and quilting. One of her life goals was to make a quilt for everyone in her family. She loved her home, family, and faith. As a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints she served where ever called but especially loved quilting with the Relief Society for those in need.
Her home was always open to guests be they family, friends, foreign exchange students. She welcomed them all, fed themthen enticed them to play a game around her dining room table. When it was time to leave, she hated to see them go.
Roberta passed peacefully in her sleep two days after her 70th anniversary with George in John Day. We hated to see her go.
Roberta was proceeded in death by her father and mother, Robert and Ruth; her brother Jackie; and her sister Carol Ann all of whom she looked forward to seeing on the other side. She is survived by her husband George and her six children and their spouses: Nelda and Bob Hubler, Shelda and Cory Bennett, Sharon and Ken Joslin, Roberta and Jay Lockett, George and Marie Shimer, Richard and Sharolyn Shimer; 30 grandchildren; 53 greatgrandchildren; her sisters Marvel Boydstun, Rita Butler, Judy Gaddo, and Linda Jack; her brothers Robert and Orville (Bud) Hosford; her brother-in-law, Gene Gaddo; her sister-in-law, Linda Hosford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
