Rodger A. Sampson, 77, of Buchanan, MI passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Rodger was born in East Chicago, IN on November 5, 1947 to Homer and Thelma (Porter) Sampson. On December 30, 1966 he married Wanda (Loy) Zavatsky and was married for 19 years. On February 26, 1988 he married Ellen (Napoleon) Sampson and celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary this year.
In Rodger's early years he grew up in Glen Park, IN graduating from Lew Wallace High School where his passions included playing baseball in many leagues. He was also selected for the Concert Choir and was cast in many musicals. After high school, Rodger, proudly served our country in the United States Navy where he was stationed in Mayport, FL on the USS Power and awarded the 17th Destroyer Force Teletype proficiency award.
Rodger was a lifelong White Sox fan, he enjoyed fishing, and spending time with the family on Clear Lake in Buchanan. He always found joy in driving the boat for tube rides and watching his children and grandchildren getting up on skis. His main goal was to continue making memories with loved ones.
Rodger was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert R. and Alice Porter, his parents Homer and Thelma (Porter) Sampson
Rodger is survived by his wife, Ellen Sampson of Buchanan, MI; children, Cheryl (David) Stefanini of Hood River, OR, David (Jeanie Pugh) Napoleon of San Diego, CA, Lisa (Don) Ringelestein of Oswego, IL, Vince (Michelle) Napoleon of Chicago Heights, IL; five grandchildren, Michael Napoleon, Anne Ringelestein, John Ringelestein, Sophia Napoleon and Bridget Napoleon; his aunt, June (Jack) Reil; and sister Edith (Dennis) Gerdes. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Rodger A. Sampson may be offered to White Sox Charities which supports many Chicago based organizations including improving Chicago's youth through education, health and wellness.
