Rodger Schubel, 92 of Lake Ponderosa passed away Wednesday evening, June 26, 2024 at the UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Monday, July 1, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma. A Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church and a luncheon will immediately follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be held at 2:30 pm at the Dunkard Cemetery in Midway, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
Rodger Allen Schubel, the son of George and Emily (Gladden) Schubel, was born on November 8, 1931 in Brainerd, MN. He attended country school near Brainerd. Rodger helped his dad on the farm before moving to Chicago where he met Darlene Burggraf. They were married on July 5, 1952. To this union four children were born, Rawn, Denise, Jeannine and Lynn. In November of 1952, Rodger enlisted with the United States Army where he was a paratrooper and was stationed in Kentucky. Following his honorable discharge in 1954, Rodger and Darlene returned to Iowa where they lived in Alburnett before building a home in Midway, Iowa. Rodger held a few Manufacturing jobs before working for 40 years for Iowa Manufacturing Company in Cedar Rapids. During that time, he held jobs with Nash Finch Company and Younkers where he swept floors to support his family.
Rodger loved his family and made sure to take his family on a vacation every year. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, trapping, bowling, golfing and wood carving. He also enjoyed playing games especially Marbles and Fast Track eventually making his own Fast Track boards. Growing up in Brainerd, MN, Rodger loved the outdoors and spending time on the lake. Following his wife, Darlene's death, Rodger married Lois Trainor. Together they purchased a home at the Lake of the Ozarks before buying a home at Thunderhead Lake. When Lois passed away, Rodger bought a house at Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma to be closer to family. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha and was currently attending the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma. He was also a member of the American Legion in Toddville and most recently attending a few meetings with the Montezuma American Legion.
His memory will be honored by his daughters, Denise (Josh) Railsback of Shellsburg and Lynn (Kenny) Barrett of Montezuma; six grandchildren, Jeromy (Reana), Joshua (Beth) Regina, Jessica, Nathan, Nicole (Aaron) and Ben; six great grandchildren, Miranda, Montana, Nevada, Dakota, Autumn and Andrew along with several other relatives and friends.
Rodger was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Darlene Schubel and Lois Trainor-Schubel; a son, Rawn Schubel and a daughter, Jeannine Slezak.
