Rodrigue DaSilva, 99, of North Providence, and summer resident of Eastwood Look, Narragansett, died Wednesday, January 8 th, at St. Antoines Nursing Facility in North Smithfield, just 5 days short of his 100th birthday. He was the beloved husband of the late Concetta A. (Bucci) DaSilva having been married for 69 years.
Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Mariano and Maria (Ramos) DaSilva.
As a graduate of the first 4 year North Providence High School class of 1943, Rod was drafted and served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 through 1946. Serving in the capacity of stateside anti-aircraft personnel, once D Day occurred he was reassigned to General George J. Pattons 3rd Army as a member of the Infantry. He became a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany when his unit was captured during the throes of the Battle of the Bulge. He was repatriated in 1945.
Mr. DaSilva was an official of the RI Dept. of Employment and Training, administering many federal programs and retired in 1985 as a Field Supervisor after 38 years of service.
An active member of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Rod served as a trustee and on the finance committee for 23 years. He was a Certified Lay Minister of the Roman Catholic Church since 1989 and served in various ministries, the Right of Christian Initiation for Adults and trained the Lectors, Commentators and Eucharistic Ministers. He served on many committees through the years, and was a member of the Secular Order of St. Francis, St. Clare Fraternity of North Providence.
He was a member of the Marieville Volunteer Fire Co. of North Providence serving as Finance officer and President and became an Honorary life member after 25 years of service. He also served as President of the Senior Volunteer Firemen of Marieville. He was a member of the VFW Post 10011 of North Providence and served as the President of the North Providence Chapter of Dollars for Scholars.
Rodrigue is survived by Rodrick E. DaSilva and his wife Barbara, Janet M. McHale and her husband Michael, Paul J. DaSilva and his wife Melissa, Maryann B. Duffy and her husband George and Carol-Ann DaSilva and her life partner Dominick DeJoy as well as 7 cherished grandchildren: Michael, James, Andrew, Matthew, Carina, Logan and Kyla.
His funeral will be held from the A.A. Mariani & Son Funeral Home, 200 Hawkins Street, Providence, 10:00 am Saturday, January 18 th followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 1081 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours are Friday January 17 th, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations in Rodrigues memory may be made to: Holy Family Home for Women and Children 5 Gibbs Street, North Providence, RI 02904.
