TOWN OF RUSSIA – Roger Bernhardt, 77, went home to our Lord the evening of October 25, 2025.
Mr. Bernhardt was born on October 5, 1948, in Utica, an only son of the late Ralph and Bertha (Zalewski) Bernhardt. He graduated from New York Mills High School and furthered his education at Utica University. In May of 1969, he entered the U. S. Army and served in Germany during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in May of 1971 at the rank of SP4. On September 22, 1984, Roger was united in marriage with the former Deborah M. Madore at St. Ann's Church, Hinckley. He was employed as a truck driver for the Salvation Army, Utica. Mr. Bernhardt was a former member and past commander of the West Canada Valley Post #1524 Americal Legion, and a member of St. John's Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, kayaking and animals.
Survivors besides his wife of 41 years, Deborah, include a daughter, Jeanne Bernhardt (Ryan); a sister, Francine McCumber; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Mary Beth Madore, Jean Ann and Robert Smith, and Barbara and Thomas Nicastro; and several nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews; good friends, Wally, Ira and Michael; a cousin, Chuck; and his feline buddies, Tiger, Tipper and Mittens. Roger was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Bertha Bernhardt.
Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street, Newport, are Sunday, November 2 from 1:00 – 3:00pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John's Church, Newport on Monday, November 3 at 10:00am with Rev. Justin Thomas, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery where Military Honors will be conferred by the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions in Roger's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
