Roger S. Paulus

Captain Roger S. Paulus, 74, of Cape Vincent, NY, passed away at his home on Monday, October 6th, 2025.
Roger was born on February 9th, 1951 in White Plains, NY to the late Valentine "Buster" and Mary (Ackerman) Paulus.
Roger met the love of his life, Irene, and the two were married on March 13, 1977. Their marriage was built on devotion, laughter, and an unshakable steadiness that carried them through 48 years together. Before welcoming their daughter, Jennifer, they shared many adventures, including scuba diving trips and a mutual love of learning that reflected their curious, spirited natures. Their first movie together as a married couple was Star Wars, marking the beginning of a lifetime filled with shared interests, inside jokes, and deep affection. Through every season of life, Roger and Irene remained one another's greatest source of strength and joy.
A true scholar and lifelong professional of the sea, his career was built on a foundation of deep technical expertise. He began his studies at SUNY Maritime College, where he earned multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography, and a Master of Science in Marine Transportation.
After graduation he spend 3 years sailing with US Steel before he went back to SUNY Maritime, this time as a professor at the college, where he taught celestial and electronic navigation for 8 years.
Transitioning from the classroom, he took his skills back to the waterways and began a distinguished 31-year career as a maritime pilot on the St. Lawrence Seaway. During this time, his commitment to the industry was matched by his powerful leadership: he served 15 years as President of the St. Lawrence Seaway Pilots Association, District 1, and six years as a regional Vice President for the American Pilots' Association (APA). He was also chairman of a Federal Advisory Board.
Outside of his professional life, Roger was happiest outdoors. He loved golfing and fishing especially. However, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was known for his intelligence, wit, and quiet strength, Roger brought warmth and humor to every gathering. He had a lifelong curiosity about the world and an unwavering devotion to his family. Whether sharing stories from his time at sea or offering steady guidance, he left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Roger is survived by his wife, Irene, their daughter, Jennifer Paulus of Olympia, WA, his favorite grandchildren, Austin and Ava of Olympia, WA, his brothers, George (Martie) Paulus of Circleville, NY, and John (Lisa) Paulus of Montgomery, NY, and nieces, and nephews and many cousins.
Roger is predeceased by both of his parents and a brother, Robert Paulus.
A summer burial and celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Cape Vincent Ambulance Service, PO Box 836, Cape Vincent, NY 13618 or a charity of your choosing.
