Obituary published on Legacy.com by J.C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel - Bowling Green on May 2, 2024.
Roger Scott, age 78, passed away of acute renal failure according to his death certificate after an eleven-year struggle with cardiac amyloidosis surrounded by his caregivers, friend of 53 years, Karen Hackney and caregiver, Mika Spear. He simply stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating around 11:12 on March 29, Good Friday, 2024, in the Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital Floor of The Medical Center at Bowling Green,
Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Roger was a wonderful Professor, who loved his students, especially his teacher workshop students whose workshops were funded by grants that Roger won from NASA and the United States Department of Education Eisenhower Program. Even though his contributions as Planetarium Director were of great importance, he always felt that the teacher workshops were the most important thing that he ever did. Roger is still caring for students as he is donating his body to university science so he will have a new cadre of students to help. Also, his pacemaker is to be placed in the body of someone in need of it thus extending another life.
Roger is survived by his sister, Barbara Bewley of
Woodstock, Georgia; his nephews, Colin Bewley, of
Clearwater, Florida and Geoff Bewley, of
Woodstock, Georgia; his grandnieces, Megan Bewley, of
Clearwater, Florida and McKenna Bewley, of
Miami, Florida; grandnephews, Ryan Bewley, of
Clearwater, Florida and Wyatt Bewley of
Woodstock, Georgia; great grand step niece, Edrienna Henderson of
Clearwater, Florida, and great grand niece Rylee Bewley of
Clearwater, Florida; Godson Andrew Hackney of Pakenham, Australia; and Caregivers and close friends Karen Hackney of
Bowling Green, Kentucky and Austin Heninger of
Owensboro, Kentucky.
Roger is preceded in death by his brothers, Karl, who died in infancy, and Brian Scott, and close friend, Richard Hackney.
Roger was born on September 6, 1945 in
Bowling Green, Kentucky to parents Ira David Sankey Scott and Evelyn Rentz Scott.
Roger graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1967 with Bachelor of Science Degrees in Physics and Mathematics and in 1970 with a Master's Degree in Physics and from the University of Florida in 1975 with a PhD in Astronomy. After a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Florida, he taught one semester at Oxnard Community College in
Oxnard, California in 1978 and joined the faculty at Ball State University in
Muncie, Indiana as an Assistant Professor in 1978 where he served as Planetarium Director. In 1991 he joined the faculty of Western Kentucky University as Professor and Director of Hardin Planetarium. He held this status until his retirement in 2012 after which he was Professor Emeritus.
Because there will be no interment, memorial services will be held in lieu of a funeral. Please return to this site at a later time when the details are available.
