1945-2025
Husband, father, friend & physician is the way Roger wanted to be remembered. But I think that Loyal should be added.
He was a great storyteller, - "The Purple Carpet"., and told funny jokes – "Maria" or I'll "hold the chickens". He loved to plan wonderful trips, find new exciting restaurants and book tickets to new plays or concerts for Gracie and himself to enjoy.
Roger was born July 6, 1945, into a military family and grew up on army bases around the country. He finally moved to San Antonio. TX where he, his parents, and sister settled. He graduated from University of Texas Medical School, Galveston, TX where he met Martha, his wife of 53 years. From there he went to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC for his surgical internship and residency in Ophthalmology and was Board Certified. This is where he met Dr. JY Jones and his journey to Dublin began.
He joined and became partner of Dublin Eye Associated in 1978 where he worked till retirement in 1999.
Roger was an active member of Dublin Rotary. Served on the Board and was Chairman of Dublin Chamber of Commerce. Also served on the Board of Directors of the hospital and was chairman during the conversion to Fairview Park. He was a member of Dublin First Methodist Church.
He is survived by wife, Martha Smith, his daughter, Lauren Hillesheim (Mike) and their sons, Quinn and Zach Hillesheim, his son Nate Smith (Melissa) and their sons, Brock, Brewer, and Bryson Morgan, his niece Cindy (Andy) Davies and their children Victori and Trevor.
A celebration of Roger's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity in Laurens County of the donor's choice.
Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory/Dublin Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Kenny and I are saddened by Rogers earthly visit cut too soon, but we know Heaven is a much happier place with his return to Glory. He will be missed ......our prayers for Martha and the family's comfort in the days ahead are sent to our Heavenly father in the name of Jesus.
