Roger Stanton, 87, formerly of Greene, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake. Private funeral services will be held. Counsell Woodley Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Greene is caring for Roger and his family.
Roger Louis Stanton was born on November 8, 1935, to parents Ambrose and Martha (Maxwell) Stanton in Greene, Iowa. On August 13, 1955, Roger was united in marriage to Janice Schmitt at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. To this union four children were born: Stephen, Diane, Sandra, and Angie.
Roger worked for Oliver in Charles City and then as a Culligan man before he transitioned from part time to full time farming. He and Janice worked as partners on their farm 5 miles west of Greene raising hogs, cattle, corn, soybeans and hay. He was a member of the Greene Knights of Columbus and taught religion classes at St. Mary Catholic Church. Roger also served as a 4-H leader.
He was an avid sports fan, particularly of his Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Roger enjoyed fishing at Clear Lake and going to picnics and potlucks with his family. He and his family enjoyed playing cards (500 was his favorite), Monopoly, cribbage, ping pong, and horseshoes. Roger was a fierce competitor, frequently going so far as to bend the rules if it would give him an advantage. His family lovingly referred to him as a 'sore loser.'
Left to cherish Roger's memory include his children; Stephen (Patty) Stanton, Diane (Andy) Stout, Sandra (Jim) Russ, and Angie (Dale) Bathke, grandchildren; Mark (Montana) Stanton, Laurie Stanton, Kim (Mike) Tesdell, Nate (Courtney) Hodges, Travis (Rachael) Hodges, David (Monica) Stout, Michael (Jill Gerken) Stout, Emily (Ziek Zymensky) Stout, Jessica (John) Hebert, Chris (Paige) Russ, Brett (Allison) Russ, and Elisa (Mike) Poggemiller, great-grandchildren; Brooklyn Stanton, Colt Stanton, Harper Stanton, Mackenzie Tesdell, Wyatt Tesdell, Tinsley Hodges, Kambri Hodges, Ryden Stout, Karter Stout, Camden Stout, Finley Hebert, Katherine Hebert, Oliver Hebert, Jenna Johnson, Halle Johnson, and Florence Poggemiller, brothers; Tom (Sue) Stanton and Jim (Jan) Stanton, sisters; Bernita Stanton and Harriet Clabough, sister-in-law Mary Stanton, and by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Janice, his parents, brothers; Charles Stanton, Harry Stanton, and Billy Joe Stanton, sister-in-law Elsa Stanton, and by his brother-in-law Loren Clabough.
In lieu of flowers Roger's family requests memorials be directed to St. Croix Hospice in Charles City: 302 N Grand Ave Unit 5, Charles City, IA 50616.
