Romaine A. Wierzba, 88, town of Buena Vista, died Sunday, June 9, 2024, following a brief illness.
Romaine was born Nov. 10, 1935, in Stevens Point, to the late Albin and Florence (Turzinski) Sankey. On Nov. 23, 1953, she married Julian Wierzba at St. Mary Mount Carmel Church in Fancher. They were married for almost 64 years before Julian's death in 2017.
Romaine worked mostly raising the family and farming. She always planted a big garden, including Sweet Spanish onions, which she sold as a cash crop. She also planted a few acres of cucumbers each year when the kids were home to help them earn enough money to buy school clothes, as well as a few "fun" items like a snowmobile, a three-wheeler and a riding lawn mower.
Her favorite pastimes were gardening and yard work - she loved growing flowers - as well as sewing. She worked for Portage County taking several Censuses, even serving as a crew leader for a farm Census. She worked at Del Monte for several years, taking bean samples to Rochelle, Illinois, daily and bringing back their mail and correspondence.
She also worked in the bakery and deli at Lila's grocery store in Plover, where she admittedly made a lot of pies! In 1980, she started working at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, first as a food service worker/cook, but also as a food service supervisor and an inventory clerk, before retiring in 1996. She also enjoyed volunteering at many church functions and for the bloodmobile.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcie (Tim) Pagel of Neenah and Julie (Randy) Riebe of Appleton; two sons, Randy (Jolynn) Wierzba of Almond and Gary (Angela) Wierzba of Stevens Point; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild due in October.
She also is survived by one sister, Rita (Daniel) Betker, two sisters-in-law, Joan Yenter and Rita Cline; one brother-in-law, Jerry (Arlene) Wierzba; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Romaine was preceded in death by her parents, daughters Cindy (Roger) Omernik and Jennie Peterson; sister Rose (Maynard) Tetzloff; brothers Robert (Patricia) and Richard (Esther) Sankey; grandson Timothy L. Pagel; and granddaughter Tammy Omernik.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 8611 State Highway 54, Almond, with the Rev. Peter Manickam and Deacon Jim Trzinski officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
