JACKSONVILLE - Ronald S. Sherwood passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at the Hock Family Hospice in Durham, NC. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1115 Lejeune Blvd. Jacksonville, NC. Burial will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.
Mr. Sherwood was born in Olean, NY on October 19, 1937. He attended the Olean High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1954 retiring in 1974 after 20 years.
Upon retirement from the Marine Corps, he worked in law enforcement in Long Pararie, MN and retired from the Sheriff's office in Cattaraugus County, NY. In 2000 he and Lee moved from Olean, NY to Jacksonville, NC.
Ron was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and a life member of VFW #9133 where he held the offices of Quarter Master, Judge Advocate, Trustee, and was a member of the Cooties, a VFW service organization.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burdette and Hannah Sherwood; and his sister and brother-in-law, Celie and Bill Jermy.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lela (Lee); sons, Todd (Heidi) Sherwood of Mountain City, TN and Scott (Shannon) Sherwood of Harrisburg, NC; grandchildren, Brandon, Miranda, Kyle, Makenna, and Reagan; great grandchildren, Maci, Jaxon, and Brystol; his brothers, Loren Tank of Sauk Centre, MN, and Gerald (Karen) Tank of Bemidji, MN; his nieces and nephews, Charlotte Jermy of Hartsville, OH, RuthAnn (Justin) Pzwaro of Grand Maris, MN, Lori (Max) Anderson of Perham, MN, and Aaron Tank of Duluth, MN.
Memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church or to VFW #9133 Piney Green Road, Jacksonville, NC.
The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 10:00am to 10:45am.
