Ronald Wayne Smith

In memory of Corporal Ronald Wayne Smith, born on August 16, 1960, in Greenville, Mississippi, and who departed from this world on August 5, 2025. With deep respect and admiration, we remember a man whose life was defined by his unwavering commitment to serving his country and to embodying the core values of the United States Marine Corps: Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

Ronald Smith's journey began at the young and tender age of seventeen when he enlisted in the Marine Corps right out of high school, joining alongside a neighbor friend under the buddy system. The oath he took at the Marine recruiting station in Columbus, Ohio, marked the start of a profound transformation that would see him complete his training at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Through his dedication and hard work, he earned the esteemed title of a Marine, becoming a part of the Few and the Proud.

Corporal Smith served with distinction for the majority of his six years at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. While he often refrained from discussing his military experiences, it is known that he served during a challenging period, when threats loomed close. His return home was marked by unseen battles, which impacted his mental health—a poignant reminder that the struggles faced by those who serve extend beyond the battlefield.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Bernetta, and son, Jerron, as well as his siblings Gene Smith Sr., Guinese Wade, Pricilla Sharp, Cynthia Scott, Sherri Smith, Brenda Pernell, Regina Smith, and Albert James Smith Jr. Ronald is also survived by a host of aunts, nieces, and nephews who cherished him dearly. He is preceded in death by parents Albert and Alma Smith Sr.

As we gather to honor Corporal Ronald Smith, we are reminded of the legendary bonds forged among Marines, connections that are strengthened through shared hardships and triumphs. Their brotherhood is a timeless testament to the indomitable spirit that Ronald embodied throughout his life.

As we bid farewell to Ronald, we take solace in the Marine Corps Hymn: “From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.” He has now reported to his final duty station, standing guard at Heaven’s scenes. Though Ronald is no longer with us physically, his spirit remains forever vigilant, marching alongside every Marine who follows in his footsteps.

We commemorate his life and legacy by committing to live with the same honor, courage, and commitment that defined his time on this earth. As we hear “Taps” echo across this sacred ground, let us remember that somewhere, Corporal Ronald Smith stands tall and proud, forever faithful. Semper Fi.
