Ronald R. Sons, 79, of Washington, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Monday, November 17, 2025.
He was born in Fairfield, Illinois on February 10, 1946 to the late Lewis and Ethel (Spriggs) Sons. He married Ruthie Kinsey in Monkey's Eyebrow, Kentucky on April 15, 1967. She survives.
Also surviving are two children, Matt (Amy) Sons, Lori Kaczmarek; two grandchildren, Kinsey Rae Kaczmarek, Benjamin Matthew Kaczmarek; two step-granddaughters, Brittanie (Greg) Andrzejewski, Elizabeth Glumm; two step-great grandchildren, Foster and Halina Andrzejewski; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five siblings, Wilma Johnston, Dewey Sons, Delores Wisnieski, Bill Allen Sons, and Synda Robison.
Ron was a United States Army Veteran. He worked in Data Processing at Caterpillar Inc., retiring after 43 years of service. He was an active member of Crossroads Global Methodist Church in Washington, Walk to Emmaus, and Prison Ministry. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Washington Youth Soccer Program during his time on the Washington Park District Board.
For 16 years, he was in ministry to deliver Christmas to needy families in Peoria. This was a result of his volunteer work with the Homework Helpers program. His servant heart couldn't tolerate knowing that students would not be receiving gifts on Christmas. This program grew exponentially after he initiated it, and hundreds of children woke to a home filled with food and gifts as a result.
His biggest joy in life was his family, especially his grandchildren. The title of Papa was his proudest role, and he was the best. His legacy of love and support will live on through them.
After he was able to retire from Caterpillar, he found joy in cruising and travelling with his favorite people. He was able to travel to many countries and see things he never thought he would see. His circle of friends was so important to him and that was never more evident than by the outpouring of love that he received during his final days.
Per his wishes, cremation has been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at Crossroads Global Methodist Church on Saturday, November 29th at Noon with Military Honors. Family will receive friends two hour prior from 10am to Noon at church. Inurnment will follow at the church Columbarium. Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Global Methodist Church.
