It is with great sadness the family of Rose Mary Cross announces her passing at 5:44 a.m., Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the home of her daughter, Cheryel Cross, in Oswego peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Rose will forever be remembered by the lives she touched through her generosity, playful sense of humor, and love for her family and friends.
Rose Mary Cross was born on June 26, 1936, to Aubry and Florence Kepford in Bonner Springs, Kansas and was the second youngest of five children.
She graduated from Chetopa High School in 1954 where she actively participated in several clubs and showcased her artistic talents. She enjoyed ceramics, quilting, and creating beautifully breathtaking stained-glass pieces. Rose retired as a cook from the Oswego School District where she will always be fondly remembered as the woman who may have had only "three children that were her own but was a mother to thousands."
Rose married Jim Cross on September 2, 1966, in Miami, Oklahoma and they joyfully spent their lives filled with love, travel, and countless adventures until Jim passed away in 2011. She was a devoted Catholic as a member of the Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary. An active member of her community, Rose could often be found socializing around town and making everyone feel loved and treasured.
Rose is survived by her sons, Richard "Mick" McCord and David McCord of Oswego; her daughter, Cheryel Cross of Oswego; her step-son, Bob Cross (Jean) of Chanute; her step-daughter, Marie Cross Mahoney (Mike) of Overland Park; her grandchildren, William O'Neal, Rob Kellogg, Lisa Kellogg, Awna Stark (Shawn), Salena Hicks, Nikki Cross Slapar (Lloyd), Bethany Cross Alexander (Darren), Andrew Cross (Danielle), Heather Phelps (Jason), and Sarah Kennedy (Chris); numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Cross, her parents, Aubry and Florence Kepford, her brother, Jimmy Kepford, her sisters, Bertha Fritz and Jaunita Honeyman, and infant sister, Eleanor Kepford, her daughter-in-law, Louise McCord, her son-in-law, Larry Greene, her granddaughters, Tiffany McCord, Lorene Kellogg, Christina McCord, Danielle Rose McCord, and her grandson, Calvin McCord.
The Rosary will be prayed at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 2024, with the Memorial Mass following at the Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego with Father Larry Parker celebrating.
